Following from my previous post on the book DAncing Girls of Lahore is this documentary into the lives of prostitutes of Heera Mandi. The documentary goes through the various reasons behind this trade, their own stories, the lives of generations of tawaif’s who are born into the profession, the prized virgnity of young courtesans, the secrets and revelations made by sex workers themselves, their pimps (some whom are the male members of the family) and even the musicians which provide the medium for mujra entertainment.

Heera mandi exists in many countries and cultures for centuries. Not saying it is all good and should not be gone away but it never did and never will. It is not due to poverty, religion unawareness or any other so called reason. It exists in extremely conservative societies in many shapes or forms and in most modern western societies equally.
The only reason is just human needs which cannot be fulfilled either sociaeo legal restrictions or personal drawbacks of some individuals. We all feel some sadness in our heart but then move on without moving a single straw.
There are bigger problems plaguing Pakistani society, which need a desperate attention from all sort of people in the country.
