I don’t understand why some people are so Anti-Sufi? Whats wrong with sufism? Albeit its basically tasawwuf repackaged. Too often I’ve heard people picking holes about Rumi, Hafiz etc so much that they don’t even glance at the beautiful poetry penned by these “sufi mystics”.

Shame. Real shame. Some people get so absorbed in their own pedantic quest for feeding their ego’s and belittling others they can’t recognise good, inspiring poetry even if it whacked them between the eyes!

And on that wonderful note, here’s something for those who look beyond imperfections to appreciate real beauty.

O my Lord,
if I worship Thee from fear of Hell, burn me in Hell,
and if I worship Thee in hope of Paradise, exclude me thence,
but if I worship Thee for Thine own sake,
then withhold not from me Thine Eternal Beauty.

~Rabi’a al-‘Adawiyya

God says, “I have created you, your moments, your breaths, your possessions, your lives. If they are expended on Me, if you give them to Me, the price of them is everlasting Paradise. This is your worth in My sight.

~Rumi

To your mind feed understanding,
to your heart, tolerance and compassion.
The simpler your life, the more meaningful.
The less you desire of the world,
the more room you will have in it
to fill with the Beloved.

Shaykh Abu Saeed Abil Kheir

His words were filled with such eloquence and wisdom, as though an ocean abided inside him, and the ocean filled with eloquent pearls. The light that shone from every pearl became a criterion of right and wrong.

– Rumi

When We Pray Alone

We are brought thick desserts, and we rarely refuse them
We worship devoutly when we’re with others.
Hours we sit, though we get up quickly
after a few minutes, when we pray alone.
We hurry down the gullet of our wantings.

But these qualities can change,
as minerals in the ground rise inside trees
and become tree, as a plant faces an animal
and enters the animal, so a human
can put down the heavy
body baggage and
be light.

~Rumi

The noise of the lover is only while he has not seen his Beloved. Once he sees the beloved, he becomes calm and quiet, just as the rivers are boisterous before they join the ocean, but when they do so, there are becalmed forever.

~Khwaja Mu’inuddin Hasan Chishti

Everything you see has its roots in the unseen world.
The forms may change, yet the essence remains the same.
Every wonderful sight will vanish, every sweet word will fade,
But do not be disheartened,
The source they come from is eternal, growing, Branching out, giving new life and new joy.
Why do you weep?
The source is within you
And this whole world is springing up from it.

~Rumi

When he has renounced the world so that he does not take to it on account of his (own) desire nor in compliance with the urges of his own self but just to fulfil the commandment of God, he is then commanded to talk to the world and establish contact with the it because now there is a portion for him in it which cannot be discarded and which has not been created for any other reason.

Abdul Qadir Gilani

The minute I heard my first love story
I started looking for you,
not knowing
how blind that I was

Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere
They’re in each other all along.

~Rumi

I have been pierced by the arrow of love,
what shall I do ?

I can neither live, nor can I die.
Listen ye to my ceaseless outpourings,
I have peace neither by night, nor by day.
I cannot do without my Beloved even for a moment.
I have been pierced by the arrow of love,
what shall I do ?

The fire of separation is unceasing !
Let someone take care of my love.
How can I be saved without seeing him?
I have been pierced by the arrow of love,
what shall I do ?

~Bulleh Shah

With my Beloved I alone have been,
When secrets tenderer than evening airs
Passed, and the Vision blest
Was granted to my prayers,
That crowned me, else obscure, with endless fame;
The while amazed between
His Beauty and His Majesty
I stood in silent ecstasy
Revealing that which o’er my spirit went and came.
Lo, in His face commingled
Is every charm and grace;
The whole of Beauty singled
Into a perfect face
Beholding Him would cry,
‘There is no God but He, and He is the most High.’

~Rabi’a al-‘Adawiyya

When my Beloved appears,
With what eye do I see Him?

With His eye, not with mine,
For none sees Him except Himself.

~Ibn Arabi
